MEETING POINT

You can find us every day at 10h30 and 14h00 at the Brussels Grand-Place in front of the City Hall. Our guides hold a white umbrella with the Bravo Discovery logo.

DESCRIPTION

One of the most original ways to discover Brussels is to follow the route of the comic wall murals. Not only is Brussels the capital of Belgium and Europe, it is also the capital of comics. Comic strip images are scattered around the streets telling the adventures of iconic characters such as Tintin, Lucky Luke, the Smurfs or Quick & Flupke.

The wall murals were signed by the most creative comic strip artists and designers of the Ninth Art.

WHAT TO EXPECT

During the visit, the guide will cover the origins and the development of the comic strip art, and the passion that Belgians share for it. The visit takes place in the centre of Brussels, where the largest number of comic murals can be found.

ABOUT THE BELGIAN COMIC ART

Belgium has more comic strip artists per square kilometre than any other country in the world.

Many cities have renamed a host of streets after comic strip artists. They have decorated metro stations in Brussels, and some of them were even ennobled by the king.

The comic art is taught in our art schools. Brussels has dedicated a museum to it, which welcomes 250,000 visitors annually, and the city is decorated with murals from comic strips. Forty millions of albums are edited almost each year, and the majority of them are exported abroad.

Why is the comic strip so important in Belgium ?

The territory of Belgium has always attracted the attention of its neighbours. Our country has often been the battlefield of european armies, and was invaded and occupied for long periods. Speaking one's own language became impossible for some people. Unable to express themselves in drawing or in writing, they decided to use images as a means of communication. This drive to use images has been expressed over the centuries in the forms of painting (from Van Eyck to Magritte), movies (in the 1950s, Belgium had the second largest number of movie theatres after the US), and comic strips.

The comic book walking tour allows you to discover one comic mural after the other. Bravo Discovery will ensure that you have the best experience of Brussels.

Comic book walking tour: let us take you along the corners and narrow streets of Brussels and introduce you to the murals of Hergé, Olivier Rameau, François Schuiten, Frank Pé, Victor Sackeville, Tibet, Marc Sleen, Hislaire, Morris, Uderzo et Goscinny, Bob de Moor and many more.
